What is NPI?

The NPI is a 10-digit number that will be used to identify you to your health care partners, including all payers, in all HIPAA standard transactions. It is an intelligence-free number that does not carry any information about the health care provider such as his state of residence, license number, or the subject of his practice. Covered health care providers and all health plans and health care clearinghouses must use the NPIs in the administrative and financial transactions adopted under HIPAA. With HIPAA standard transactions, the NPI must be used when a provider identifier is needed. It replaced identifiers for health care services including Medicare legacy IDs, UPIN, OSCAR, PIN, and National Supplier Clearinghouse numbers.
